Meeting the challenges of poverty reduction

21 Aug 2009

With 32% of the estate population still living below the poverty line, the estate sector represents a significant challenge to poverty reduction and the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals in Sri Lanka. To address this longstanding issue, the Ministry of Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development, with UNDP’s support, will soon be releasing a draft road-map. The road-map is based on a ten year National Plan of Action (NPA) for the social development of the plantation community. The NPA is a comprehensive plan which aims at addressing all dimension of human poverty in the plantation community. The NPA was approved by the Cabinet prior to the Budget Speech in November 2006 and the Government has assigned to the Ministry of Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development, and particularly to the Estate Infrastructure Division, the responsibility to lead and coordinate the implementation of the ten year plan. UNDP is helping the Government in the implementation of the NPA, by assisting the Estate Infrastructure Division, and other relevant institutions and mechanisms, to effectively coordinate, monitor and implement the National Plan of Action.
