Livelihood recovery in 6 districts in North and East

28 Aug 2009

UNDP and the European Commission are set to initiate a new project that will focus on livelihood recovery in six districts in the North and East of Sri Lanka. Community Recovery Project (CRP) will be introduced in Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Mannar, Vavuniya, Killinochchi and Mullaitivu to help in the development of community infrastructure, agriculture, livestock and irrigation facilities for resettled communities.

The project, scheduled to be launched by the end of the year, will support Government efforts for resettling communities by working with the North-East Housing Reconstruction Programme (NEHRP). NEHRP supports the reconstruction of housing for conflict-affected communities in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. The Community Recovery Project will work with NEHRP-supported communities to help them to develop ways of earning their livelihood. Of the total amount of 10 million USD, approximately 800,000 USD has been ear-marked for early recovery efforts in Killinochchi and Mullaitivu to assist the Government in the resettlement activities in the districts once these areas are accessible.
