Colombo, 1 August, 2007 - A multi organization task force has been set up to put together an action plan for community based disaster management programmes. The Task Force is expected to further develop guidelines, training manual and action plan for next years; share the action plan with all concerned and finalize it; and to develop mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation.
Members of this task force include Sri Lanka Red Cross, Practical Action, Green Movement, Oxfam, Disaster Management Center, University of Sri Jayawardenapura, University of Moratuwa and the University of Ruhuna and UNDP.
At the end of a two day regional workshop and discussion held yesterday on Community Based Disaster Management Programme (CBDMP), participants agreed to set up a Task Force to carry forward the initiative. Participants from Pakistan, India, Maldives, Bangladesh, Philippines, Thailand and Sri Lanka participated along with representatives from the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), UNDP's Regional Crisis Prevention and Recovery office in Bangkok, Disaster Management Centre, IFRC, Care International, FAO, OXFAM, Green Movement, Practical Action, Ministry of Disaster Management and Human Rights of Sri Lanka and other leading NGOs and INGOs.
The workshop shared current local practices in Sri Lanka and learnt from regional experiences on Community Based Disaster Management (CBDM) programmes. This workshop also initiated a community based disaster management modality for disaster management development at the community level.
