UNDP and SLIDA to conduct Game-based Foresight TrainingJun 9, 2017
The United Nations Development Programme today entered into a partnership with the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA) to conduct game-based trainings on foresight and innovation for officials of the public sector to strengthen and transform them to become champions in the sustainable development process of the country.
Following the success of Sri Lanka’s First National Summit on Foresight and Innovation which was held in May 2016; one of the primary outcomes included the development of training modules and workshops on Foresight and Innovation for the public sector. The Summit and its pre-Summit activities informed the need for institutionalized programmes that builds the capacity of development practitioners and planners, on foresight and innovation. Accordingly, through this partnership, UNDP will facilitate two workshops for SLIDA, which will be tailor-made to suit the requirements of two cohorts of the public sector - Induction trainees and Class I officials.
In addition to seeking global expertise within the UNDP networks, UNDP will also bring in a regional leader in innovation work, Fields of View, India, who advocates for tackling an issue from various angles in order to find holistic solutions to development challenges. Participants will, using games and simulations catered to the Sri Lankan context, understand how different models can be used in development decisions which will allow for agility and comprehensive development decisions, and assist with effective policy planning.
Speaking about this collaboration, Mr. Jorn Sorensen, Country Director of UNDP stated, “UNDP is keen to build even further on this partnership with SLIDA to provide more trainings and capacity building modules by bringing the technical capacity within UNDP globally and regionally, as well as convening global thought leaders on public sector excellence.”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Wasantha Perera, Director General of SLIDA, speaking on the importance of this partnership stated, “These workshops with UNDP and Fields of View, India will bring in a new skill set, introduce tools, and provide different perspectives on value additions to traditional development planning and facilitation processes, which will allow the participants to contribute effectively within their daily capacities. SLIDA looks forward to continued collaborations with UNDP. ”
UNDP, as the development arm of the United Nations, partners with countries in strengthening their institutions and supporting democratic governance. For this purpose, the two workshops will target different cohorts of the public sector equipping each of the participants with valuable skills and tools in foresight and innovation techniques needed to bring in new insights and ways of tackling issues and providing value addition to traditional development practices and solutions.
